Ds Digest S is the gentler member of the Systemic Formulas digestive range — a 60-capsule blend of enzymes, botanicals and glandular factors for stomachs that react badly to anything forceful. The S stands for sensitive, and it’s a softer version of the original D Digest formula.

How Ds Digest Works

Digestion runs as a chain, and it starts in the stomach. If there isn’t enough acid there, protein leaves the stomach half-broken-down and everything downstream inherits the problem — heaviness after meals, bloating, poor absorption of the nutrients you did eat. Ds Digest S supports each link in turn rather than flooding the system with one strong enzyme: your own acid production, the enzymes for fat, protein and carbohydrate, bile flow so fats emulsify, and the gut lining while all that happens. That staged approach is what makes it tolerable for people who can’t take a standard enzyme.

Four free-form nutrients plus a proprietary blend of fifteen more.

• Pancrelipase and pancreatin — porcine pancreatic enzymes. Pancrelipase is concentrated in lipase, which splits dietary fat into absorbable fatty acids, and carries amylase and protease alongside it.
• Pepsin, betaine HCl and L-glutamic acid — the stomach end. Pepsin starts protein breakdown and signals the pancreas to release its own enzymes; L-glutamic acid prompts your natural hydrochloric acid production and supports healthy peristalsis.
• Goldenseal root and gentian — berberine-bearing bitters that stimulate bile secretion, lift gastric and pancreatic enzyme activity, and help regulate the microbial environment in the gut. Goldenseal also supports the mucosal lining.
• Bromelain and papaya leaf — plant proteases that work on protein at a different pH from pepsin, widening the window in which digestion happens.
• Ox bile, liver and stomach RNA/DNA tissue factors — bovine and porcine glandular factors for the organs doing the work, with kola nut, spearmint, echinacea and guava rounding out the blend.

I get reflux. Won’t betaine HCl make it worse? Often the opposite — reflux frequently comes from food sitting too long rather than from too much acid. Still, the timing is worth checking with your practitioner.
