EnviroBiomics ERMI Test | DNA Home Mould Test (Swiffer Kit)

The EnviroBiomics ERMI test is a DNA-based dust analysis that shows how mouldy your home or workplace really is. You wipe around ten dusty spots with the swiffer cloth in the kit, post the sample to the lab, and the report covers 36 mould species — with one overall score for the building.

How the ERMI Test Works

ERMI stands for Environmental Relative Moldiness Index, a method developed by scientists at the US EPA. The lab reads the DNA in your dust sample with qPCR technology and measures the concentration of each mould species. Species linked to water damage are weighed against the common moulds found in everyday house dust, and the difference becomes your ERMI score. Every species is also flagged green, yellow, orange or red against reference data from 5,000 American homes, with stars marking anything 10, 100 or 1,000 times the normal level.

What It Measures

All 36 species, reported in two groups:

• Group 1 — water damage moulds (26) — the species that point to a wet building, including Stachybotrys chartarum (black mould), Chaetomium globosum and a long list of Aspergillus and Penicillium species.
• Group 2 — common indoor moulds (10) — Alternaria, Cladosporium and other background moulds found in nearly every home, used as the baseline for the score.

The report also includes the HERTSMI-2 information, a second score built on the Big 5 species from Group 1.

Who It’s For

This test answers the question a body test can’t: is your house the source? It suits you if your symptoms ease when you leave home, if a room smells musty or has a history of leaks, if you want to check a rental or a house you’re about to buy, or if you’ve had mould remediated and want proof the job worked.

Suggested Use

Put on the gloves supplied and wipe at least ten dusty spots through the house with the swiffer cloth — tops of door frames, shelves, HVAC vents — wiping in one direction only. Don’t wipe visible mould spots; the goal is settled dust, not the source itself. Once the cloth has visibly greyed, fold it into the zip bag, complete the enclosed form and post the sample to the lab. The swiffer method suits homes with hard floors or limited carpet.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good ERMI score? Below 5 is commonly considered acceptable for the general population; below 2 is often recommended if you’re mould-sensitive or dealing with CIRS. The species breakdown matters more than the number itself.

How is this different from a mycotoxin test? The ERMI test measures your building; the Vibrant America Mycotoxin Test measures the mould toxins your body is carrying. Together they connect the source to the load.

Where is the sample analysed? At the EnviroBiomics laboratory in the United States.
